When I first read the task/assignment for week 1 I was frustrated to think I was going to be spending my time building a web site, rather than focusing on instructional design. I realize that we need a place to be able to share our artifacts (took me a while to figure out what the instructor meant by that, which is a good argument for not using jargon in a class).
My first attempt was a disaster. The site was built using Wix.com (like this), however I tried to use a business template. I was deleting more content than adding. I had quite a bit of experience with a professional blog I wrote for a few years (http://BIforConstruction.com) using WordPress but I was lost in Wix.
Fortunately, a couple of classmates reviewed my site and pointed out two major flaws with it:
Hridaya wrote: “I'm not able to open your link- could you try re-posting it or making sure you've published it?” Needless to say, THAT was a problem.
Natalie was able to open the site, but noted “The site you've created is very colorful and functional. I'm not sure that it meets all the requirements for this assignment, but I expected that it would be the site about yourself, not the company.” Good feedback, because that was exactly NOT what I was trying to achieve. I wanted a site that would be used exclusively for class assignments and not for work or personal promotion.
I deleted the site and began with a fresh, blank site. It’s what you’re seeing now. I hadn’t planned on blogging but thought, why not? It’s a free feature and in the days and weeks to come, it might be fun to look back at the issues and challenges I encountered in class and see how they were resolved.
